Bernice was born on November 17, 1934, to George and Annie Mae Hill of Pontotoc. She attended Ecru School and was part of the class of 1952. In 1951 Bernice met Fenner Shumaker in Ecru. They married and had six children: Don, David, Cathy, Carol, Chuck and Chip Shumaker. Bernice started her work life adventure at Hunter Sadler, where she worked for six years and then went to work at Daybrite Lighting in 1984. She retired in 1995. She worked for the Mississippi Democratic Committee in Jackson Mississippi for over 12 years and was a representative for Stanley Home Products for over 50 years.
A devout Christian and member of Ecru Baptist Church since 1961, Bernice taught Sunday school for over 55 years. She has always been a faithful servant to the Lord. She loved cooking, spending time with her family, and serving her community. Bernice loved living in Ecru and worked very closely with the town leaders to make Ecru a better place to live, work and raise a family. She was instrumental in the renovation of the community center in Ecru and was loved by so many in the community. In her late 70s she started a prayer shawl ministry. She crocheted over 2000 shawls that were donated to sick people in the community and local cancer centers. She prayed over each prayer shawl before it was given to someone in need of encouragement and physical warmth.
Annie Bernice Shumaker was survived by one sister, Betty Sanders of Memphis; her children Don Shumaker (Donna) of Pontotoc, Cathy Roberts (Don) of Memphis, Carol Gillespie of North Carolina, Chuck Shumaker (Sandy) of Blue Springs, and Chip Shumaker (Claudia) of Morristown, Tennessee; 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
