Chief William F. Douell, 81, lifetime resident of New Albany, passed away Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Baptist Memorial Hospital Desoto County, following a brief illness.
A Memorial Service honoring the life of Chief Douell will be Saturday, July 1, 2023, at 12 Noon, in the Memory Chapel of New Albany Funeral and Cremation Care with visitation starting at 10AM. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
Born December 1, 1941, in New Albany, he was the son of the late Audrey "Foxy" and Bessie Parrish Douell. Chief Douell was a graduate of the Union County Public School System and served as Staff Seargent in the United States Army. Becoming the first paid Fire Chief in New Albany, he proudly served 30 years until his retirement in 2001 and continued working for the Union County Sherriff's Department for seven more years.
A Christian, Chief Douell will be remembered for his "happy go lucky" personality and "jokester" sense of humor. Providing for his family was first priority, however he found time to enjoy hunting and fishing with his son.
Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of 28 years, Cheryl Douell, three daughters, Angie Dover of Belleview, IL, Paula Mayden (Leslie) of Curley, TX, Michelle Marks of Joplin, MO, two sons, Michael "Dooley" Douell (Anita) of Etta and Keith Douell of Myrtle, one sister, Mary Katherine Powell of Lakeland TN, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild and his special canines Missy and Mommy. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Calvin Doell and C.H. Douell and one sister, Caroline Burgess.
