Willie Ray Lewis, 79, resident of New Albany, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May, 24, 2023 at New Albany Health & Rehab Center following a brief illness. Funeral services honoring the life of Mr. Lewis is Saturday, May 27, 2023 at 1PM in the Memory Chapel of New Albany Funeral and Cremation Care, located at the intersection of W. Bankhead and Hwy 30, with Bro. Jake Kimmett officiating. Visitation will be from 11AM until time of service. There will be a private family burial following.
Mr. Lewis was born, September 20, 1943, in Lafayette County, to the late Hubert and Ora B. Lepard Lewis. He received his education from the Pinedale Public School in Union County. Mr. Lewis was employed with the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) until his retirement.
A Christian, Mr. Lewis will be remembered for his giving heart, and his love for his grandchildren who affectionately called him "Poppa Willie." Some of his favorite hobbies included attending auctions, his collection of valve stem caps from expensive automobiles that everyone he came across had to have, John Deere memorabilia, traveling with his wife to Branson, MO, his love for westerns, Marty Robbins and Don Williams music.
Those left to share his memories include his wife, Saundra Lewis, three daughters, Ashley Lewis of Olive Branch, Lisa Foley (David) of Blue Springs, and Shelia Kelly (Shaun) of New Albany, one brother, Thomas Lewis (Jean) of Myrtle, five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Lula Lewis, one daughter, Susie Lewis, four sisters, Nora Rhea, Inez Rutledge, Opal Grose, and Ruby Legler, and one brother, James Lewis.
